While many leaders eased a trifle when the president authorised the ' army to take over the railroads fol lowing stalemated strike negotia tions, assorted favorites moved up . ward. Mild Irregularity prevailed near the close. Dealings were active at intervals with low-quoted Issues Inclined to - monopolise the ticker tape. Trans fers for the full proceedings ran to around 1,400.000 shares. Commonwealth & Southern came out on an 80.000-share block, un changed at 3. but subsequently ad vanced a trifle to a 1948 peak. I1M Police Kept Busy Over Week -End Sixty days in jail plus a $25 fine was the sentence passed Monday morning on Alvan C. Blgby. 33. of 616 Commercial, after he pleaded guilty In municipal court to charges of intoxication and disorderly con duct. Blgby was painfully cut across the top of his head Saturday night when he fell through a plate glass window at Prltchard's Mill Supply company. 133 S. 7th, and a city police officer had to have the as sistance of two state patrolmen In subduing the man. Got Rough The city officer attempted to ar rest Bigby at the Kanteen on S. 7th, where he had been creating a dis turbance. Blgby resisted, the officer said, and In the melee felt Into the window. He came out fighting and two state police officers who hap pened by joined in the scuffle to handcuff the man. Seven stitches were needed to close the gash in Blgby's scalp. City police arrests over the week end Included 15 persons for intoxi cation, four for traffic arrests, four for violating the city dog ordinance, three for disorderly conduct and two for vagrancv. $100 Fine Orvat Vemon Clark. 21, 2336 Ore gon, paid a $100 fine on a charge of drunk driving, and a 30-day Jail term was suspended. Clark was ar rested early Sunday morning at 6th and Elm. Harry C. Jack Travis Pays Visit To Klamath Jack Travis, Hood River news paperman, was here Sunday on a visit In connection with his con dldacy as a delegate to the repub lican national convention and to help make advance plana for the Harold Stassen visit May 18. Travis Is strictly a Stassen man and so declares himself on the May 21 primary ballot. He talked here with Phil Hitch cock, state senate candidate and a member of the Stassen suporters' group. Stay-Down Strike In Second Week SHEFFIELD, Eng., May 10 (TV A slay-down strike by 93 miners at Waleswood colliery went into Its second week today. The men quit work and refused to come to the surface last Monday in protest against a decision by the national coal board to close the mine. The board contends the works cannot be oiwratcd profitably. The strikers have built an altar In their chamber 1150 feet under ground. They held services yester day. The Rev. Harry Whlttnker. a Baptist who Is a former coal miner, preached on the text "Walt on the Lord, be of good courage." Wives of the miners cook and send down four meals a day.
